My family and friends call me Jake. When I’m not in the office, I’m spending time with my wife and two daughters, working around our house or mountain biking. I invested in my first mutual fund at the age of 15 with savings from my first job.

Knowledge | Confidence | Discipline

The Building Blocks for a Long-Term Approach

Our core philosophy, and our approach to retirement planning, financial planning and investment management, are guided by a few essential common-sense principles and focus on the variables which are in your control.

We understand that staying disciplined is not always easy. Woodstone’s role as your advisor is to provide you with the knowledge and experience needed to build confidence. If you have confidence in how capital markets work overtime, you can maintain discipline during turbulent times. As a result, you will be more likely to stick with your philosophy during challenging times.

Building Block for a Long-Term Approach Woodstone Financial, LLC Asheville, NC

Signal Vs. Noise

Finding A Signal In a World of Noise

We believe in focusing on the things that you can control. We all live in a world of constant news and information - what is often referred to as noise. At Woodstone, we believe in filtering out the information and variables over which you have no control. Instead, we strive to identify and act on those things in your control.

To Help You Plan Effectively

Investment Management Together With Financial Planning

Woodstone Financial offers comprehensive financial planning and investment management in Asheville, NC and nationwide. We start with investments because it’s important, but we quickly begin to focus on the advanced planning areas.

Our Financial Planning Services Include:

Cash Flow and Expense Planning

It is critically important to understand the flow of money in and out of our financial lives. This is not always an easy task, especially when making an educated guess as to how this flow of money will change over time. Understanding cash flow allows us to gain a better understanding of opportunities to plan for large expenses and save for our different goals.

Risk Management

What can get in the way of our plans? Addressing this question is the central focus of risk management. Reducing, avoiding or transferring this risk becomes the planning focus; whether through stress-testing your financial plan or discussing the pros and cons of different types of insurance – risk management is an essential part of a well-constructed financial plan.

Legacy Planning

Planning for the future doesn’t stop at the end of a financial plan. Just as you need to review your retirement plan periodically, it is important to consider your estate plan. Changes in law, family situations or goals could all necessitate a review of your legacy plans, and their impact on your decisions today.

Income Tax Planning

Income tax planning and preparation are two distinct areas of income tax focus. Tax rules can be incredibly complicated and planning around income taxes should be conducted in advance. While we do not provide individual tax advice, or prepare taxes, we are always focused on how tax rules might apply to you and how they might impact your retirement plan and decision making. We then coordinate with your income tax professional to implement any tax-related decisions.

Retirement Income Planning

What happens when you retire? Among many things, there is one common experience: your financial focus takes a dramatic shift. For most, this shift means that instead of striving to accumulate assets, you’ll need to figure out how to withdraw assets in an efficient way for income. What if you encounter turbulent markets soon after retirement? The guidelines for managing money are different from what they were when you were working. It is essential to understand how, where and how much income is being distributed to you in retirement.

Retirement Savings Planning

Are you on track? Am I saving enough for retirement? What other opportunities are there to save? These are some of the fundamental questions that we address with any client that is saving and preparing themselves for decades of financial independence.

Ready to Get Started?

Structure in the Face of Uncertainty

Our philosophy is to participate in the growth of global capital markets through all conditions. We believe that broad diversification is key, that costs matter and that markets serve investors efficiently the majority of the time.

How We Manage Portfolios:

We practice an investment philosophy based strictly on evidence - our actions are grounded in Nobel-prize winning academic research, not our own personal opinion. We do not attempt to outperform the market or a specific index or benchmark and do not attempt to ‘sit out’ or shield portfolios, during poorly performing or declining markets.

As a firm, we do not have a market forecast and our crystal ball is always cloudy. Instead, our team implements a carefully crafted and customized mix of investments for each of our clients. This mix adheres to a consistent set of evidence-based principles and the structure of that mix is maintained over time.

We will encourage you to maintain the alignment of your portfolio with your long-term goals. Throughout the year, the most common activities in your portfolio are rebalancing to your target investment allocation of stocks and bonds and managing for taxes.

We do not make changes to your portfolio based on short-term events: forecasts of interest rates, markets, geopolitical events or economic circumstances. The evidence suggests that those who seek to capture the full expected returns of financial markets must be willing to stay invested through the temporary declines. Those who best capture the full expected return of financial markets usually deposit additional funds during temporary declines, when prices are depressed and on sale.

This disciplined approach is simple but not easy.

Your investment portfolio should be aligned with your financial goals, not a current opinion about the state of markets, the economy, geopolitics or any other external factor.

Our Process

Defining the Value of You

Our Roadmap for Working Together

Step 1:

Schedule A Call

A 20-minute phone call is the starting point to learn if our firm fits well with your needs. In this conversation, we will answer any of your questions and gain an understanding of your main values and concerns. We’ll also want to find out some basics about your financial situation and savings. If we are not the team to serve you, we will be able to refer you to another firm better suited to your needs.

Step 2:

Meet to Learn More

If there is a basis to more deeply explore the possibility of working together, we will have a 60-minute discovery meeting in person (or remotely) to thoroughly understand what your goals and concerns are, as well as what may be unique to your situation or circumstances. At this time, we will also request a comprehensive set of information and relevant documents for us to gain an accurate picture of your situation.

Step 3:

We will process what we have learned.  We commit significant time to gain an understanding of your situation. We’ll combine the information you provided with our decades of insight and collective experience to formulate a summary plan of action in addressing your goals and concerns.

Step 4:

Second Meeting

We will get back together to share our observations of your situation - what are the strengths and what are the weaknesses. We focus our analysis at the crossroads between investment management and your financial plan and exactly what needs to be done to best achieve your financial goals and the life you desire. We will share our summary and recommendations with you in a way that is easy to understand, making sure you are comfortable with what we can do for you.

Step 5:

Reflect & Decide

Important decisions are worth sleeping on. After we meet, we suggest reflecting on our feedback and your experience getting to know us. We have built a community of clients who appreciate the passion and dedication we bring to their financial lives. We are not here to convince you to work with us. We work best with those who are excited to be a part of what we do and to be a part of the process. Ask yourself these questions when you have time to reflect:

  • Do I like and respect the team at Woodstone?
  • Do their recommendations make sense to me?
  • Do I understand and agree with their investment philosophy?
  • Do I believe Woodstone offers a strategy that resonates with me or should I take a different path?

Frequently Asked Questions

Why would I hire an advisor?

With the help of an advisor, you’re choosing to delegate the implementation and monitoring of your financial plan and investment portfolio to experienced professionals. You are not looking for a get-rich-quick scheme - instead, you have a patient approach and desire to plan for your future. Let us help you focus your time on other areas of importance to you.

Do you manage my assets?

We manage all, or nearly all, of your investment assets that are eligible. These assets should be considered the “main plan” and the foundational core of your financial future. Pre-existing holdings will be sold (pending income tax planning analysis) if they do not fit your foundational core and are not recommended.

Do you have a minimum?

At Woodstone, we do not have a minimum account size to work together. When we first meet, we will determine if there is a strong basis to work together – meaning we desire to work with those whom we can provide great value.

How do your fees work?

We are compensated 100% by client fees, fully disclosed to you in advance. As a fee-only firm, no one pays us to sell or recommend anything to you. We actively choose not to sell products or accept any type of payments from commissions, loads, revenue-sharing or referral arrangements. We always strive to recommend solutions that are in your best interest. We have no hidden fees and our process is fully transparent. From the start of our relationship, you will know what we are doing, why we are doing it and what it costs. For our services, on average, we charge a flat fee per year based on the value of the assets under advisement.

Why do you work with clients on an ongoing basis?

We specialize in working with a limited number of clients on a long-term, ongoing basis. We believe that supporting our clients into and throughout retirement is a process that is always changing. The planning process is about adapting, growing, finding opportunities and staying on track to meet your financial goals. Put simply, planning doesn’t ever stop!

What if I only want a one-time comprehensive financial plan?

We anticipate having long-lasting, healthy relationships with all of our clients. However, if there is a compelling reason that we should engage in a planning relationship on a one-time basis, we may do so. We limit our financial planning projects to 3-5 clients per year.

Why is educating your clients so important?

We enjoy working with people who recognize the importance of financial decision making. We recognize that financial decisions are often best made when you have a clear understanding of the framework and implications of that decision – the pros and cons. Building knowledge builds confidence and understanding of the moving parts of your financial life. Confidence and understanding we see lead to better decision making.

Can I cancel my planning relationship with you at any time?

Yes. You may terminate our relationship at any time without any “hooks” binding you to us.

What are your responsibilities to me?

As a firm, we deliver a deliberately planned path to achieve your financial goals. We strive to help you build financial confidence and we work together in an ongoing partnership to implement, monitor and update your integrated wealth advisory plan. As fiduciaries, we are legally committed to acting only in your best interest under a "fiduciary standard of care". We practice an investment philosophy based strictly on evidence - our actions are grounded in Nobel-prize winning academic research, not our own personal opinion. Additionally, we will always encourage you to maintain the alignment of your portfolio with your long term goals.

What are my responsibilities to you?

As someone seeking assistance in your financial affairs, you have chosen to delegate the implementation and monitoring of your financial plan and investment portfolio to experienced professionals. In order for our relationship to remain beneficial, we ask that you provide us with the requested data needed to maintain your financial plan. Additionally, you are willing to practice financial discipline, the joint actions of:

  • Saving regularly, investing early and often.
  • Patience in your preparedness. Patience in the worthiness of your plan and your preparation for all market cycles and all stages of life.
  • You expect us to evaluate and manage all, or nearly all, of your investment assets within your portfolio’s approved guidelines.
  • You are willing to proactively focus on a long-term, personalized, planned course of action, rather than reactively focus on short-term market conditions.
  • You are willing to act in a timely manner to complete the goals we have jointly identified.
  • You are willing to accept the academic evidence which shows that the future of financial markets, countries and companies cannot consistently be predicted or profitably timed.
  • You are willing to remain continuously involved in the process, understanding that each component is interdependent.
  • You are willing to make us aware of errors as soon as they are discovered.
  • You are willing to inform us of any significant changes in your financial situation or goals as they occur.

If something comes up, can I meet with you?

Yes. We plan to meet to review your financial life at least once on an annual basis, including the results and expenses of your investment portfolio. Alternatively, we make ourselves available by phone and email for follow-up or questions that arise between meetings.

Are our conversations confidential?

Absolutely. We maintain client information under strict standards of security and confidentiality. We will not disclose the nature of our relationship to anyone without your permission. If you work with other professionals (i.e. CPA or attorney) we will seek your permission to share information with them on a need-to-know basis.
